Home / From the Cable Car

D+ 700m
Duration: 3 ½ h – 4h
Difficulty: Medium

This, along with “Caben de Remoña” is one of the easier ways to get to the refuge since the worst of the slopes are avoided by using the cable car. We start from 1800m at the upper station of the cable car, where there is a café.

Starting out we follow the track that continues towards “La Horcadina de Covarrobres” (the same one that goes to Aliva or La Vueltona and Cabaña Veronica). A little before reaching “La Horcadina”, turn right and take a path that goes left and down to the “Hoyos de Lloroza” passing by the remains of a cabin and near the “Los Pequeños Lagos” (the small lakes).

Then the path goes to the “Canal de San Luis”, whereby we climb up the hillside on the left, where the road is clearer and marked.

We continue keeping the Canal, “Las Torrez de Altaiz” and “Pico San Carlos” on the right. Where it seem like the Canal and the path end, we reach the “Hoyo Oscuro” (Dark Hole). Just here, look 90 degrees to your left and take in the view of the peaks that rise up around the edge of the hole.

Once past this rocky lip we reach a stretch of grassland “La Colladina de Las Nieves”. Nearby (10 minutes) is “Pico de la Padierna” which is worth while climbing for the views to “Valle de Liebana” and “Vega de Liordes”. Otherwise, we continue going West and across the pass. Descending on the left we find the better route, and marked with cairns. At the end of the descent this path goes through some small holes to connect with the path from “Vega de Liordes” right at the top of “Sedo de la Padierna”.

All that remains is to follow the marked path described under the other approaches to the refuge.
